The VFIP committee is often described as representative, but it operates nothing like a true negotiating body. It is a small, semi-self-selected group without department-wide buy-in, using a flawed survey and a single leading question to justify changes that benefit a specific cohort.
By negotiating ONLY yearly payouts inside a deeply flawed, city-imposed plan, the committee has chosen accommodation over advocacy, instead of fighting to restore a system that never needed to be dismantled.
This editorial cartoon reflects what many firefighters already know. While meaningful reform was possible, VFIP “committee” members chose to pursue a single change, yearly payouts that primarily benefit those at or near the 10-year milestone where payments sharply increase, rather than fighting for systemic fixes that would protect the entire department.
